A visit to Blue Spring State Park is a highlight of a trip to DeLand and West Volusia County.
Blue Spring is the largest spring on the St. Johns River and is a designated manatee refuge. It's the winter home to hundreds of West Indian Manatees.
If you'd like to see the manatees you should visit during the months between mid-November and mid-March. On cold days, several hundred manatee may be observed from the overlook. The spring is closed to all water activity during these months and swimming or any human interaction with the manatee is strictly prohibited.
During the rest of the year, the crystal clear, 73-degree water is enjoyed by swimmers, snorkelers and certified scuba divers. Fishing, canoeing and boating are also enjoyed along the St. Johns River. River boat tours are available; for reservations, call St. Johns River Cruises at (386) 917-0724. Blue Spring State Park is in Orange City, just a short drive from DeLand, at 2100 W. French Avenue.
Here's a tip: The Park often reaches capacity during the week and on weekend, during both the winter and summer months. To avoid a wait, visit the park early. It opens at 8 a.m and closes at sundown. There is a small admission fee.
